Splinters

Forgive me, but this is a political post, and I assure you it will be my only political post on this blog. For those who know me, you know how passionate I am about the Constitution and freedoms we hold dear in the USA. I needed to put my thoughts in one place, and here it is.

It’s been a crazy week, politically, and I know I’m not alone in my view of the big picture, fearful for the future of our nation. How did we got to this point with two of the most dishonest and disliked felons as frontrunners for the presidency? I could write a thesis but I won’t because my message isn’t about them. It’s about us, the American people.
This election has divided our nation like the Civil War, perhaps worse. We’re even starting to see bloodshed on the frontlines with police officers being murdered and radical Islamic terrorists coming across our porous southern border with the blessings of the current POTUS, but it doesn’t have to be this way. “United we stand, divided we fall” still holds true. Instead of analyzing the sordid history of how we got to be in this precarious position, I want to take a step back from the ledge and look at a way to unite against the forces of rampant corruption in the political parties. They are happy to watch us attack each other, even if it’s just on social media. All part of their plan to stay in power. You see, the more fractured we become, the more freedoms they siphon away from us, keeping themselves in power. Concerned about the way things are going? I hope you are. It’s way past time to give our leaders the benefit of the doubt to do the right thing. They prove daily how out of touch they are with the people they were voted to represent. Do you feel represented? I feel like I’ve been hit by a truck, and now it’s backing up to make sure it finished the job. It doesn’t have to be this way!
We have four months until Election Day. Can we unite and stop the train wreck from happening? Even with so many heated opinions circulating, I think we can. Let’s consider the multi-faceted conundrum:
The Democrat nominee. In a word, awful, but many Dems will hold their noses and vote for her because they feel they have no alternative. Many wanted Bernie Sanders. Instead they got the Teflon Witch who is unable to utter a truthful statement. This is a message for the Sanders crowd: what are you going to do on Election Day?
The Republican nominee. Equally unpopular, but many Reps will hold their noses and vote for him because they feel that Clinton is worse. They wanted someone else – anyone else at this point would have been a better choice – but they feel cowed in to voting for someone they know to be a Democrat just to keep the Teflon Witch out of the White House. Not much incentive, is it? Equally hated by both parties, Trump only has the backing of 30% of the Republicans. Even the Hitlary-hating Democrats won’t cross the line to vote for him (many did to vote in the primaries, but I digress). Clinton is counting on the disenchanted Republicans and Independents to stay home or vote third party, diluting the vote to easily give her a win.
If both candidates turn your stomach, what is the alternative?
1)    Staying home on Election Day. This is how Obama won his second term. We can’t wash our hands of this looming disaster and hope for the best. We must go to the polls. Only sheer numbers will overwhelm the fraudulent votes, too (which, face it, will all be for Clinton).
2)    Writing in a different candidate. This won’t work, even if the disenchanted crowd wrote in the same person. Many states don’t allow write-in candidates for the general election. It will dilute the vote and Clinton will win.
3)    Voting third party. This has potential, but again there is a big problem: there are too many third party candidates. Unless we get behind the same one, the vote will be too diluted and Clinton will win.
4)    Is there another option? I’ve seen some Giant Meteor 2016 bumper stickers. That sounds appealing!
Seriously, take a look at 1, 2, and 3. Short of open civil war, those are what will happen on November 8, 2016. The only viable solution is #3. But we must unite behind one candidate. And, let’s face it, that candidate is going to be far from perfect. He will be a second choice for everyone who had any emotion invested in the outcome of this election.
But he won’t be Clinton or Trump.
I can already hear the moans of, “third party never wins – third party vote is a vote for Clinton.” Sorry, this time you’re wrong about voting third party. If the 70% of Republicans who don’t want Trump and the 50% of Democrats who don’t want Hitlary and the huge number of Independents who think both parties suck all decided to show up on November 8th and vote for a third party candidate, what would the results be? How about four years of unity? How about four years of sanity? The key is that we must all unite behind him, as imperfect as he may be, for this to work.
The alternative is too ghastly to imagine.
So, what do you say, my fellow Americans? Can we agree not to hold our noses this time to toe the party line? Can we agree not to stay home on Election Day and instead vote for someone who has potential to be a decent leader instead of someone who’s clearly in it for themselves? Not perfect, not the man/woman we wanted in the driver’s seat, but WAY BETTER for the nation than the splinters we have become. The splinters that will fester, infect, and create scars that will never heal. We have four months. If you agree, please share this far and wide. If you don’t agree, please think about it. Weigh the pros and cons. Give up your pride and anger for four years of, if not healing, at least no more splinters.
  God Bless America.
